CD Reviews: A Jimmy Reed Tribute and Mark Knopfler

Omar Kent Dykes & Jimmy Vaughn- On The Jimmy Reed Highway

Fun. That says most of what you will need to know about this CD. Whether you are looking for something good to listen to while driving, a good party CD or just want to dance, this CD is for you. It is obvious that the artists were having a good time while recording this and felt strongly about the material. Kim Wilson and Lou Ann Barton make some guest appearances to enhance this release. Omar (from Omar and the Howlers) sounds great ( a combination between Howlin’ Wolf and Wolfman Jack) and Jimmy Vaughn lends some excellent guitar work here. The opening song, “Jimmy Reed Highway” is an original for this release and sets the tone for the rest of the CD. Other standouts are, “Big Boss Man” and “Bright Lights, Big City” but there is not a bad cut on this CD. Check this one out and be ready to have some fun!

Mark Knopfler-Kill To Get Crimson

If you have read my reviews before, you know that I very much liked last year’s release “All The Road Running” from Mark Knopfler and Emmy Lou Harris. In this follow up, Knopfler does not disappoint. He has achieved what few artists can, a comfortableness with his music that comes across in his recordings. Mark has always played an excellent guitar, but he seems to have found a perfect blend between his playing and his singing. Nothing is overdone, as with so much of music today, and its simplicity is its charm. Songs like the opening cut “True Love Will Never Fade” make you feel good and put you at ease. Other favorites are ‘The Scaffolder’s Wife”, “In The Sky” and my favorite “Punish The Monkey”. How can you not like a song with lyrics like “Punish the monkey and let the organ grinder go”. It will put a smile on your face and keep you coming back for more. The previously reviewed CD was for parties, this CD is best for a quiet moment when you want to feel good.
