CD Review: Levon Helm Dirt Farmer

Levon Helm: Dirt Farmer

Yes, that Levon Helm from The Band. The voice is not exactly the same as you remember. He has obviously gotten older and has also survived throat cancer. The fact that this CD was even made is a small miracle and we are glad he did. Levon has picked some great country, bluegrass and blues songs to highlight his talents. I call this authentic American music. When he sings “Calvary”, you can almost feel his pain. “Poor Old Dirt Farmer” is another songs that you will “feel” when you hear it. If the soundtrack of “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou” was for you, then this release will be a fine compliment to it. I can’t imagine this type of music will be for everyone, but if you like music that tells stories of life, love and hardship, then you will want to give this a try. For my money, it’s a winner.
