Best CD’s This Year (So Far)

It has been a while since I have posted about music, so I thought I would give you a treat and list 4 favorites that all rank as a ten for me.

Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears-Tell Em What Your Name Is

If you like funk, blues and soul then you will like this CD. At times, this guy channels James Brown. For me, the song of the years so far is “I’m Broke”. It talks about where people are today and mixes it with a beat that you can not sit still to. This is an outstanding release that will keep you coming back for more. There is nothing subtle on this CD so be prepared to have some fun.

George Harrison-Let it Roll

Known as the quiet Beatle, George Harrison was a fantastic musician. This greatest hits compilation is a testament to his musical legacy. All the hits are here including a couple of live versions of his Beatles favorites “Here Comes The Sun” and “Something”, but I liked discovering a nugget like “Marwa Blues”. If you are a fan of the Beatles and George Harrison, you will definitely like this release.

Rick Estrin & The Nightcats-Twisted

Okay hep cats, ready to boogie and have some fun. This local band has made an outstanding release with their new front man Rick Estrin. From the opening cut “Big Man” this CD gets going and never stops. The addition of Kid Anderson on guitar coupled with Estrin’s outstanding harp playing is going to make many take notice. Give this one a try and you will not be disappointed.

Joanne Shaw-Taylor- White Sugar

Where did this come from? I was listening to A-1 Blues and head Joanne for the first time and was blown away. She is a Brit who knows her Blues and Rock. I would go as far as saying she is the female version of Jimmy Page. The guitar work here needs to be heard to be believed. Her smoky vocals only add to overall experience. I’m not sure what song to list as they are all that good. You have got to listen to this is you are a British Blues fan.
